Day 1: Cusco – Huaran – Cancha Cancha
Our journey starts at 5am with a short 2 hour drive from Cusco to Calca. In Calca we make a quick stop at the local market for any last minute supplies. We then continue to the trailhead in Huaran (2,925m/9597ft). On arrival, we meet our chef, horsemen and horses and settle for a hot breakfast along the stream. After, we start our first and short day of hiking, continuing on a gradual incline towards the village of Cancha Cancha (3,750m/12,305). Depending on your speed, lunch will either be served along the way or on arrival at camp.
Once at camp, you have some time to explore the village and take in the unfamiliar scenery. Admire the gigantic snow-capped mountain peaks, a gushing river nearby and herds of llamas and alpacas. Your horsemen and cook will set up camp and serve afternoon tea, which is later followed by a scrumptious dinner.
The stillness of everything gives you an immediate feeling of peace and tranquility.

The skies here are also home to flocks of Caracara falcons and Andean geese.
We then start our descent, stopping to admire the seven waters waterfall (Qanchis Pacha Waterfalls) along the way. Just a short while later we arrive at camp located at Quiswarani Village (3,700m/12,139ft). At camp we are welcomed with everything already set up. Enjoy hot drinks and appetizers before tucking into another abundant and expertly cooked dinner.

General FAQs Lares Trek to Machu Picchu
The Lares Trek is a multi-day trek in the Calca Province Peru and usually ends in Machu Picchu. The trek is named after the town of Lares which lies 40miles/64km north of Cusco. Currently, its rated 3rd most popular trek in Peru after the Classic Inca Trail and Salkantay Trek. Even though its at a higher altitude and reaches higher passes, its still viewed by many as the easier trek compared to the aforementioned treks. What makes it more moderate is the fact that the daily hiking distances are shorter and unlike the Classic Inca Trail there are no Inca steps to negotiate.
It stands out as the best trek to fully immerse yourself in an authentic cultural experience. The trek´s many routes all go through secluded indigenous Quechua villages. The Lares Valley is home to mainly indigenous citizens of Inca descendants. Quechua is the main language spoken by almost 95% of the population.
Duration of the trek can vary, but it generally takes 3 to 4 days to complete the trek. The exact length and duration depends on the specific route and travel agency you choose. The trek does usually end at Machu Picchu, but how you get there is really up to you. This can add more days to your trek depending on your choice. The most common way is to simply go to Aguas Calientes to catch the train to Machu Picchu after your trek. However, you can add the short or classic Inca Trail to Lares Trek, which will add an extra day or 4 days respectfully.
No, there are many routes on the Lares Trek, if you are an avid hiker with a good command of Spanish then this shouldn´t be a problem. However, its important to note that the locals do not speak English, some may be bilingual, that is speak Quechua and Spanish. Peru has a developed and organized trekking industry. Avoid any hassles and just get yourself a local tour operator. Also note that you cannot enter Machu Picchu without a guide. So if you plan to end at Machu Picchu, then we highly recommend getting a guide and tour operator in Cusco. Some of the guides at Machu Picchu could end up telling you a lot fairy tales about Machu Picchu, instead of facts.
The best time to do the Lares Hike is during the dry season (from April to October). In these months, the sky is clearer and there is less chance of rain. This trail is at high altitudes, rain can actually mean snow in some parts of the trek. Avoid the rainy season that runs from November to March.
The cost of the Lares Trek varies depending on the travel agency, the itinerary, the services included and the duration of the trek. You can find options ranging from affordable to luxurious. Plan your budget accordingly.
Trek Type | Number Of Days | Cost |
---|---|---|
Lares Trek with a good local company | 3-4 | ±$500 – $750 |
Lares Trek with an international tour agency | 3-4 | ±$1000 |
The Lares Trek is moderately demanding, but not as challenging as the Inca trek. You must be in good physical shape and used to walking long distances at high altitudes. The altitude can be a challenge, so it’s important to acclimatize before you begin.
Unlike the Inca trek, it is not necessary to obtain a specific permit for the Lares Trek. However, you still need to purchase an entrance ticket to Machu Picchu.
The Lares Trek is all camping. Orange Nation has access to two campsites with flushing toilets. It´s nothing fancy, but it is a welcomed convenience in the wild.
The Lares Trek is really not known for its archeological sites. You will find some remnants of Inca wall terraces, which the locals now use to protect their livestock.
Tour operators that do trekking to Lares include basic equipment such as tents, food and a pack horse.
In addition, it is recommended that you bring the following:
- Sleeping bag
- Adjustable trekking poles
- Hat or cap (prepare for both cold nights and sunny days)
- Sunscreen
- Warm clothes for the nights
- Light clothes for the day
- Rain poncho
- Reusable water bottle
- Hiking shoes
- Swimwear (for Lares hot springs)
- Snacks
- Camera
